What is now La Salle College began life in 1962 as a coeducational primary school run by the Ursuline Sisters who had purchased the 24-acre site for a school to replace the old St. Joseph's in Roodepoort.

Around that time, an assessment of the educational needs of  Catholics in the West Rand by Bishop Hugh Boyle concluded that there was a great need for a Catholic boys' school in the area.

Girls were already catered for at St. Catherine's in Florida and at St. Ursula's in Krugersdorp.

The Bishop initiated negotiations between the Superiors of the De La Salle Brothers and the Ursuline Sisters which resulted in the purchase of the property by the Brothers for a Catholic boys' school.

La Salle College officially opened on January 24, 1966 with twenty students.  Br. Alpheus Farrell was the first principal assisted by Br. Brendan O'Donoghue.  The two Brothers took up residence in the music room of the College and lived in cramped and trying conditions until the new community residence was ready for occupation in March 1971.

The Mission Statement states that La Salle College is committed to the ideals of educating people so that they may develop the full potential of God's gifts to them and be in truth the people of God that they are destined to be.  Through daily prayer, in  class and chapel, the La Salle College staff submits all decisions to the guidance of  Jesus Christ.  In so doing, they make their teaching part of  their daily Christian walk.
