Saint Mary’s is a Nyeri Catholic Diocese boys secondary school located in the town of Nyeri (population 75,000) about 100 miles north of Nairobi.
Founded by American volunteers in 1961, it was run by the Consolata Fathers from 1968 until the Brothers took over in 1990.Brother Stephen Creagh (LINE DISTRICT) was the first Brother Headmaster.
Practically all the students board at the school which draws students from all over Kenya. Fees are low at 33,000 KSH/year, comparable to most public schools. Over 20% of the 440 students enrolled are on half or full scholarship because of economic need.
St. Mary’s is more than a school: It is a community. For many, it is their home-away-from-home. Students have a sense of ownership of the school since they are responsible for its maintenance. The emphasis on community building and an increased sensitivity to those less fortunate (Street Children Program) engenders in the young man a maturity, self discipline, and concern for others that will make him a fine Kenyan
