Mwangaza College is presented as an excellent Skilled Training Centre, which caters for the needs of the youth of Kenya.
Mwangaza College is a coeducational diocesan Catholic skills formation Centre of
the diocese of Nakuru. Located in a serene environment two kilometres south of Nakuru town, it adheres to the philosophy that education is one of the most important ways by which the Church fulfills its commitment to the dignity of the person. The principal focus of the school is the student and his/her religious, social and academic development.
The college as a centre for excellence has progressively upheld its MISSION of providing a positive environment that offers spiritual and academic, theoretical and practical experiences as enshrined in the philosophy of John Baptist De la Salle.
Its VISION, shared by the Catholic Church, is the importance of religious instruction, vocational training and cultural development of those whom it serves. The resulting community, with its diversity, proclaims this common vision.
Serving a student body of over 450 students with two thirds being ladies, it has remained a unique learning institution highly rated in the region. The Brothers have steadfastly shared the educational mission with their lay colleagues as they strive to enlighten students from diverse social and cultural backgrounds.
In a fast-evolving world, relevant courses are key if a college is to fulfill its core mission and vision. That is the reason Mwangaza yearns to produce graduates who are both highly qualified and deeply committed to the service and transformation of society.
The seven key departments in the school have progressively attracted students from far and wide in their quest for an all-rounded nourishment, thanks to the school’s good name.
The Accounts department, which carries the bulk of the students, has persisted in churning out qualified accountants whose skills the job market yearns for. They work in various areas as tutors, auditors and bankers in the private sector while others are employed by government bodies. Mwangaza has also maintained its status as a major KASNEB examinations centre. The department offers ATC Levels I & II and CPA Part I – III. Performance in the KASNEB exams has remained exemplary since the school’s inception with a near to eighty percent pass rate, which is extraordinary.
Computerized Secretarial department is also another major area whose skills are highly sought. Its graduates are spread all over working as personal secretaries and administrative assistants in the public and private sector. The moral uprightness inculcated at the school coupled with the programs of study affords them a head start as they venture out in the job market.
Fashion & Design and Tailoring & Dressmaking are two departments that have maintained their popularity since the school’s inception. Merging the creativity of a student with the set CITY & GUILDS and Mwangaza’s curricula, new fashion ideas crop up while at the same time improving the existing ones. Confidence levels of individual students are enhanced especially when they model their creations in public. With proper guidance, students have been seen to create breathtaking works. One of the approach is to remodel ancient designs with today’s mindset.
Closely related to the above two is the Hair Dressing department with the Beauty section being the latest addition. Offering CITY & GUILDS certificate and diploma levels, our graduates work in salons and beauty parlours while quite a chunk get self-employed, a plus to the realization of vision 2030, as they create even more job opportunities. Of importance to note is that the beauty industry is growing in leaps and bounds all over the world. The Mwangaza administration has maintained its drive to equip the salon with the latest beauty equipment.
In this information age, Information Technology is paramount in all sectors. With most employers today demanding computer skills from jobseekers, the I T department has continually imparted this knowledge. Our students sit for the London-based and world-renowned ACP examiners. The department offers both certificate and diploma levels. Part time students are examined by PITMAN.
Food & Beverage department is also another recognizable area in the school. Offering both Craft and Artisan Certificates, it specializes in food production and service. Skills imparted see the graduates working in the hospitality industry all over the country, in various capacities. To help students develop confidence and independence through a well-rounded college education, Christian Ethics, English Communication and Book-keeping are part of the programs of studies for all students.
The college has a well stocked and regularly updated resource centre which comfortably caters for all the departments in the school. Free internet is also provided to all students so as to encourage them embrace modern research methods as well as grow together with the rest of the world.
Mwangaza College is blessed with having a highly qualified staff of Brothers and Lasalian Partners who take the students interest at heart who meet the students where they are at, which is at all different levels, and then try to bring them to where they would like them to be.
